Era Mentira
english version
wall text
During the past three years Carol Galiñanes was working with photos and films which belong to her father. Many of them had not been developed yet. She, as a memory rescuer, was into the lab and met with ghosts and a past which she never saw, her mother : younger and unknown but also so close to her. Into these revelation and intimacy scenes, mother and daughter come together again .
Her father´s archive (including an 8 mm-film) unveils itself to be questioned and reinterpreted by the artist. The photobook was the first step for this body of work and for building a new story from isolated pieces.
Sometimes documents can be transformed, as intimacy can also be collective, and memory can be a fantasy or a question.
As editors we love all these kind of mediums and for this reason many times we take this path: from the archive to the book and from the book to the wall. We seek to reconstruct memories, rewrite the past, raise questions, and bring to light new meanings and new connections.
Era mentira continues making its way. The archive, once hidden in the darkness, appears intimately through the photobook. Now it unfolds in the gallery space into a shared time. The wall and the movement trajectory involves the observer and the work is presented as an experience to be inhabited with the whole body.
Every photo, every piece keeps something of the past but also the observer´s present. The wall becomes a new page — a new possibility for reading, remembering, and imagining.
